Breed history Of The Akita

Akita Inu is one of the ancient breeds of dogs. It was bred and known in Japan, Akita for many centuries. For hundreds of years, this dog’s appearance has remained unchanged. However, its uses were and still are versatile.  Akita can be used as a guarding or service dog, as a police dog, but it also can be used as multipurpose hunting dog. In Japan, where the Akita was bred, the dogs were even used for bear hunting. They can be used as water retriever dogs as well. Akitas were also used as fight dogs. They are very strong and well equipped for living in cold climate, so they were also used as sled dogs.

Temperament Of The Akita

Even though Akita dogs are friendly by nature, they have strong pack instincts. This means, their owner has to start their training, while Akita puppies are still young. The dog owner has to show strong will and character to prove to Akita, that s/he is the head of the pack. Otherwise, Akita dogs may get very bossy and even aggressive. If people are unable to show the dog their superiority, it may conduct aggressively during meals, try to scare you away and make you wait to eat second. So, Akita dogs really need skillful and strong willed owners to turn them into agreeable dog companions.

Description Of The Akita

These dogs are strong and enduring. They are tall and proportionally built in stature. The head is triangle, if you view it from above. The muzzle is broad. Thin muzzle is viewed as a fault. The ears are comparably small, but always erect. The dog has double coat, which helps it to survive in cold regions. The under coat is softer and denser than the top coat. Akita dogs go in different colors. White, pinto or brindle are acceptable. They may have markings on their coats. Brindle Akitas have color “masks” on their heads.

Dimensions Of The Akita

Size difference between dogs and bitches is insignificant. They may reach up to 28 inches in height and 120 pounds in weight.

Before you start looking for breeders, you should make sure, you really want and can keep such a dog. Akita puppies are cute and tempting to buy, but these dogs are not toys. The breed of dogs still keep many of wolf instincts and patterns of behavior. One of the first Akita facts, you need to get acquainted with is the fact, that these dogs are able to act aggressively. Even the youngest of puppies behave as leaders. These dogs make great service, hunting and police dogs, but they demand strong human leadership. Their owners have to be able to show, who is the leader of their pack. If the puppies are trying to get bossy and master you, this behavior should be corrected right away and never tolerated. Another fact about Akita breed is that these dogs have strong inborn hunting instincts and do not get along well with other animals. This is why they should never be walked without a leash. Most dogs of this breed prefer to be the only dog in your house. They do not get along well with other dogs.  They may live and make friends with the dogs of opposite sex, but not with the dogs of their own sex. This is important, when considering the option of breeding these dogs and getting your own kennel of this breed. Another fact to consider, prior to buying a puppy is that they are very particular about sharing their food with others. You should never feed your puppy near or with other animals or allow kids to meddle with their food or bowls. This may lead to aggression manifestation. One should also avoid getting eye contact or getting down to its level. Such behavior is viewed as aggression by the dog and may lead to attacking you. So, considering buying Akita puppies, you should make sure first, you can meet the requirements of being a owner of this type of breed.  If you have young kids in your home, think twice, before you buy this breed of puppy. If treated cruelly, these dogs can attack kids. So, kids have to be trained to exercise proper behavior with these dogs and never tease them. In most cases, kids should not be left alone with Akita dogs or even grown up pups. Never buy this type of puppy for a present. Its receivers may not be able to handle it and train it properly.
