Breed history Of The Basset Hound

Basset Hound breed was bred in Great Britain. The known records of the breed history date back to 16th century. Basset Hound dogs were bred from Norman dogs, which got named by English people Bloodhound dogs. Initially, Basset Hounds were used as badger hunting dogs.
Basset Hound breed became widespread in Europe, when hunting ceased to be the privilege of rich and noble men. Common men started to hunt on foot and they needed a slower pace dog to help along. This is where Basset Hound dogs became handy. Today, these dogs have turned into excellent family pets and companions.
Once you have selected your Basset Hound pet and brought it home from the breeders’ location, your life, full of affection and friendship starts. However, there are certain things you should know about this breed, to make life healthy and more enjoyable both for you and for your pet. Young Basset Hound puppies 8 to 10 weeks old desperately need your time, love and affection. This breed is known for its timidness. So, during firs weeks of the puppies’ lives, they need all the love and care, they can get. They also need the sense of security. So, be prepared to spend lots of time with your pet right after the purchase.  Older puppies, ranging in age from 13 to 16 weeks, still need much love and time. But, it is also a good time to start some training. This breed of puppies never respond well to harsh training. It has to be done softly. You can always use food incentives in the course of training, as they love food. You should be careful and do not over feed your puppy as it can lead to obesity. Right after you bring the pup home, make a visit to your vet. Show them all the medical documents on the puppy, let them examine it and give recommendations. Make sure to follow the vaccination schedule for your puppy and timely treat it for worms. Another key health care element for Basset Hound puppies is not letting them go up or down stairs, until they reach 6 months in age. Their bodies are long with short legs. Walking the stairs or jumping up or down from a sofa or a chair may overload the dog’s back and cause serious problems for your puppy. You will need to carry your puppy up and down the stairs for this time frame. Another important thing to know, is not letting your dog sit on any of the home furniture. Basset Hound puppies love to cuddle. They also love to make ‘nests’. This means, you risk to ruin your furniture fast.  When they make such nests, they dig and take the upholstery off the furniture or rip it. Learning the simple rules of caring for your new Basset Hound pet, makes your life together easier and full of joy.
