If you think so too visit our Dachshund Breeders Page !

Temperament Of The Dachshund

The main characteristic of a Dachshund dog is fearlessness. This is a very active and restless dog. They have big enough hearts to fit not only the braveness, but lots of affection for their family, too. There is one thing Dachshunds love and their owners may hate, especially, if they have nice flower beds or kitchen gardens. That is digging. Dachshunds love to dig and can hardly be trained out of it. They are pretty sociable dogs and get along well with other pets.

Description Of The Dachshund

These dogs have more inches in length, than in height. They have short legs and long body. The Dachshund’s head is also long and pointed. They come in three options of coat: long hair, short hair and wired hair. They also range in colors. Red and black is the most common Dachshund color, but it is not limited to it.

Dimensions Of The Dachshund

Dachshunds come in three sizes: standard, miniature and toy. The smallest dogs of this breed amount up to 7 inches in height and 11 pounds in weight. The tallest kind is toy Dachshund and it reaches up to 12 inches in height, but only 8 pounds in weight. Standard Dachshund dimensions are 8 to 12 inches in height and around 11 pounds in weight.

The Dachshund is a great fit for many families.  If you think that this breed is a good fit for you then Visit our Dachshund Breeders Page.

Breed History Of The Dachshund

Dachshund is a German breed of dogs. Its name, translated into English means badger dog. It was bred specifically for this purpose. The dog had to be brave and small enough to penetrate the badger hole and hunt the animal out. Badgers are large and furious enemies to deal with. That is why this comparably small dog possesses such a fearless character and stout heart. This dog had not just to hunt out a badger, but to kill it, too.
Dachshund breed was bread over a period of at least 100 years. Back in 19th century, Dachshund dogs got widely spread in Europe and especially in UK. There they were kept and bred mainly as pets. That is why present day Dachshunds are smaller in size, than the first dogs of this breed, used for hunting.
When you find a breeder who sells Dachshund puppies. Visit the kennel. Take a look at both of the puppies parents, if it is possible. At least, take a look at the mother if not both.  Examine puppy for health issues. You should ask Dachshund breeders right questions. Find out about the vaccination or worm treatment, the puppies have undergone. The key element of selecting the right puppy is to find a dog with the right temperament. Even though most Dachshunds are active and lively, some pups are more active, than others. Find a dog to meet your lifestyle the best way. If you are an active person and take daily walks or runs in the park, then select the most active puppy.  If you do not have much time for dog training or lead a comparably inactive life, you should look for a slower puppy. This is crucial, as a lively puppy can literally turn  your house and yard up side down. The life under one roof with overly active Dachshund can be difficult.  Ask breeders about puppies’ dispositions. Find the dog to suit you and your style of life the best. This way, you would avoid lots of conflicts with your dog and other family members, too. Keep in mind, that puppy with no vaccination or worm treatment done, can cost less.  However, you still would have to take them to the vet and treat them. This would add up to your after purchase costs. Getting a vaccinated Dachshunds puppy is safer.
