Temperament Of
The Labrador Retriever

One word to describe these dogs is steady. They are steady in their emotions and loyalty for their owners. Labrador Retrievers are great service and babysitter dogs. They get along well with elderly  people and kids. With the view of their background, it has to be mentioned, that these dogs simply love to swim. They make great water rescue dogs, too.

Description Of
The Labrador Retriever

There are two main branches of breeding with Labrador Retriever dogs. English Labs are sturdier in stature, heavier and larger. American Labs are lighter and taller. Their coat has no  fur waves on it. The coat colors range from chocolate, to yellow and black. The color of the nose is important, as fading colors are considered to be a fault. For yellow and black dogs the color of nose should be black, and brown for chocolate color dogs. The color of eyes ranger from brown, hazel or green.

Dimensions Of
The Labrador Retriever

Dogs and bitches of this breed do not differ in sizes much. Dogs reach up to 24 inches in height, while bitches reach 23 inches. The same is true about weight. Dogs may reach up to 75 pounds in weight, while bitches reach up 70 pounds.

Breed History Of The Labrador Retriever

In spite of the name Labrador Retriever did not come from Labrador. The origins of this breed come from Newfoundland. There Labs helped local fishermen to fish. They would jump into the icy water to catch any fish, escaping from the hook. They would also help to rescue people or to draw out nets.
From the Newfoundland Labrador Retriever dogs were brought to England. This event took place in 19th century. There they were crossed with Labradors, setters and other retrievers. This is how the modern day Labrador Retriever breed came to be. Such breeding enhanced Labrador Retriever’s hunting instincts and abilities.

Labrador Retrievers are widely known and very lovable.  Labs are  one of the most popular breed of dogs in USA. These dogs are more, than just pets. They are eager, willing and able to help people in many ways. Labrador Retrievers can work as police dogs, watch dogs, service dogs or lead dogs.

 Purchasing your Labrador Retriever

Once the decision is made to purchase a Labrador Retriever you should take a look at both parents of the puppy. If that is not possible, take a look at the mother. Then, ask the breeder some questions. Thoroughly question them on the medical treatment of the Labrador Retriever puppies. A good breeder would vaccinate and treat the puppies for worms. Of course, this may make the price higher, but it is worth it.  Ask the breeder about Labrador Retriever puppies’ diet. They should be well fed and groomed. See, if pups are friendly and not afraid of people. This means the breeder has taken time to socialize with them properly. These are all a sign of a good breeder.  Labrador Retriever puppies should not be sold and separated from the mother, if they are under 7 weeks in age. They should have enough time to feed on the mother’s milk and build up immune system. Another question to ask a breeder is about the puppy’s temperament. Discuss withe the breeder what kind of dog you want and what purpose you are buying the puppy for. If you are a elderly person or a disabled person you would want a less active puppy. Pay attention to all the puppies in the litter.  Watch to see if some of them are too aggressive, or too slow.  Sometimes even the ‘normal’ puppy later on may turn aggressive or to slow it may simply be in their family.  Always when looking at the Labrador Retriever Breed information be mindful of the purpose you are getting your Lab puppy for.  Find out if the parents were trained or used for the same kind of work or service. If that is the case, most likely, you would be able to train the pup for the same work as well.
