These dogs are cheerful and not aggressive, if timely socialized and well trained. They are not very bossy, but still require some rules of behavior to be set. They also need human leadership and affection. Wheaten Terriers become adorable playmates for kids and great companions for elderly people.
They should be particularly well trained and socialized with cats, as these pets stimulate dogs’ hunting instincts. So, if you have cats in your home, try to get a very young Wheaten Terrier pup to turn these enemies into friends. Also, make sure to take time and socialize Wheaten Terrier puppies well with other dogs to avoid them become dog-aggressive.

These are square type body dogs. Their heads are rectangular with large black noses. The eyes should be of yellow or brownish color. These dogs have long one layer coat. It is silky to the touch. Wheaten Terrier dogs go in different shades of wheaten color. However, the pups are born brown. Later on they gain a more inherent color for this breed.

The height of these dogs ranges from 17 to 20 inches, at this, the bitches are a bit lower, than the dogs. The weight ranges from 30 to 45 pounds.

Wheaten Terrier is thought to be one of the oldest terrier breeds in Ireland. It is one of the four main terrier breeds of this country. Wheaten Terrier is a working dog. For many centuries it has been owned and bred mainly by poor people. One of the older days law prohibited poor men to keep expensive dogs. If you let them they will start bossing you and everyone in your home.  Therefore, at a young age, these dogs have to be socialized well and taught to recognize people, as their authority.  This breed are not large dogs. They are very proportionately built. One of their distinctions is the triangular shape of eyes. The nose and lips are always dark in color. The coat is not long, but is double.  It has a very thick and soft under layer. The colors of the coat go in a combination of colors, such as red, white, black and tan.  These dogs are very clean and pretty easy to groom.  Height ranges between 13 to 16 inches. And the weight ranges between 18 to 25 pounds. When you are ready to get your puppy and start training the first thing you need to do, is to get it from reputable  breeder.  This type of dog is a rare breed of dog.  You should never buy it in your local pet store or from a puppy mill.  This breed of puppies and adult dogs have playful and stubborn personality. Making it very difficult to train. Therefore,  the last thing you want, is to get a puppy with behavioral problems.  Once you get your puppy, immediately start its training. This breed can be pretty challenging to train. Even experienced dog trainers may not know the exact knack of training these little tyrants.  They are very willful and playful. They tend to start turning your house up side down. The place to start with them is the gentle and reward obedience training. Arm yourself with lots of your puppies favorite food and patience. Do not expect to achieve much right away. Two other things you can use very successfully in your puppies’ training.  Your attention and their freedom. These dogs love to play and love your attention.  As soon as its starts to misbehave, withdraw from the game, ignoring the puppy. It would soon get bored and stop causing trouble.  You may also lock the puppy up for a short while, restricting its freedom.  Be consistent in your rules and training. Do not get too emotional or aggressive, when punishing these puppies. They may start fighting back and try to win you over. Set up your own schedule for walks or food time for your puppy.  They prefer to do everything according to their own schedule. Offer them time to play, to walk and to eat.  If they refuse to obey you, do not make them.  Just withdraw or take away the food. When the dogs starts begging you to take a walk or eat, ignore.  When it is done with its tricks, you offer a walk and or food when you have time for it.  This way your Shiba Inu would learn to come at once, when you call it and do as you want.
